Description

While high quality evidence-based treatment approaches for tics exist, little reputable information is accessible regarding the treatment barriers unique to youth with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, the presence of stereotyped and/or repetitive behaviors associated with ASD can interfere with accurate assessment and diagnosis of tic disorders, while difficulties with recognizing and interpreting social, emotional and behavioral cues often slow or attenuate treatment response. This presentation offers broad strategies – as well as specific actionable treatment techniques – to address and overcome these barriers to treatment of tics among autistic youth.
